A Staycation to Remember

Ask me how I’d like to spend the perfect
weekend and I’d tell you: lazy mornings spent in bed, a trip to the spa and of
course, lots of time for shopping. With both Adam and my schedule running on
overtime for the month of March, we couldn’t think of a better reason to kick
off spring than a weekend getaway in the city.

We recently received our American
Express Platinum Card
and after combing through the welcome kit, we were
beyond excited to test out just how good their benefits are with a staycation
in Toronto.  We are certainly familiar
with the city but it often feels like we’re so quickly in and out, that we
rarely have time to soak it up at a slower pace. So we decided to call on our Platinum
Concierge to arrange all the details for
a weekend getaway. The Concierge staff has easily become one of my favourite
perks (of many) that come along with being a Platinum Cardmember. They are
available day and night as a personal resource to help you with everything from
taking care of reservations to coordinating big and small day-to-day requests.

Upon calling our Platinum Concierge, I was
immediately greeted with the friendliest team eager to find out what my plans
were for the weekend and how they could help.
We chit chatted for a few minutes and based on my sentiments, they
recommended the Four Seasons hotel based on its renowned spa, proximity to
shopping and because it’s known to have some of the coziest beds in town.  Within a few more minutes, we had an
afternoon arranged at the spa, makeup consultation with Charlotte Tillbury,
dinner at the new ‘it’ steakhouse in town, NAO, and brunch on Sunday afternoon
at La Société.

As I was ferociously writing notes during
my call (seriously Type A over here), I was assured an itinerary would be sent
my way once everything was confirmed. And low and behold – it was (dream team!).  A follow up call the next day from the
Concierge team was another great surprise as we discussed and reviewed the
plans for the weekend. They also reminded me that they were available to chat
all weekend long if we needed anything at all during our stay in the city!

Eager to get into the city earlier than
later Saturday morning, we were unsure of what we were going to do with our
luggage (because we all know I have a problem packing light) since check-in wasn’t
until later in the afternoon. But leave it to American Express to solve this
problem! As a Platinum
Cardmember
, I have access to special benefits at certain hotels around the
world through the FINE HOTELS & RESORTS program. Since Four Seasons is one
of them, early check-in and late check-out was available to me at no extra
cost. By noon, we were settled in with our feet kicked up on the bed, while we
overlooked the city from our upgraded room (also a benefit of the FINE HOTELS
& RESORTS program!).

Next on the docket? A Deep Tissue Massage for
hubby and I at the Four Seasons Spa that was beyond perfection.
The staff at the Four Seasons Hotel knew me all too well – chilled wine and macarons ;)

After an hour of pampering and lounging, I
was then whisked off to an appointment to have my makeup done at Holt Renfrew,
just in time for drinks and dinner. Around 7:30pm we headed to the D-Bar in the
Four Seasons hotel to find a table reserved and cocktail menus waiting.
Platinum Cardmembers can receive a $100 food and beverage credit for use at the
FINE HOTELS & RESORTS property they’re staying at so we put it to good use
with a Manhattan for him and a Queen Bee cocktail for me.

Dinner was delightful to say the least at
NAO Steakhouse. Since NAO is part of the American Express Platinum Dining
Program, we started dinner with a complimentary house cocktail at the best seat
in the house (courtesy of the Concierge team)-great for people watching! Be
sure to have the Japanese Fried Chicken if you go – you’ll die!

Sunday morning kicked off with a bang
thanks to a delivery of mimosa’s to the bedroom so we could enjoy a little
cocktail to start Sunday Funday.

Essentials for a day out on the town!

We finally managed to pull ourselves from
that cozy bed just in time for a personal shopping appointment at Holt Renfrew.
I perused the latest from Prada, Dior, Miu Miu and more from the comfort of the
stylist lounge. Squeal!
Getting into trouble in Yorkville!
Always stop by Club Monaco for interior inspo!
A quick stop into the flower market.

And what’s a Sunday without brunch? We
headed to La Société for another reserved table à la the Platinum Concierge
team and enjoyed special arrangements like complimentary mimosas waiting for us
at the table, all thanks to the Platinum Dining program. Now that we were
fueled up for the day, we toured around Yorkville, enjoyed a little coffee
break to warm up, and perused the flower boutiques on Avenue Road.

Normally we’d be rushing back to the hotel but we had a guaranteed late check out at 4PM, thanks to our Platinum Card,  so we maximize our second day in the city to the fullest.

Overall, to say we were impressed, would be an understatement. Our American Express Platinum Card not only delivered incomparable benefits but provided
us with experiences I would have never thought possible from a credit card
provider. Backed by a team that delights with you in planning your vacation,
you really get the impression that the team over at Amex is as excited as you
are to kick off your next adventure. Adam and I are already scheming our next
vacation and can count on making a call – or two – to the Platinum Concierge
team to arrange the details from beginning to end. To find out more about the
card and its many benefits, be sure to click here.

Travel Diary: Saint Maarten

I’m so excited to be sharing our travel diary with you today from St. Maarten. Last week Adam and I had the pleasure of visiting the ‘Friendly Island’ in partnership with Expedia.ca. To say we were impressed is an understatement. We’ve recapped some of our favourite activities, places to eat and tips below from our week in paradise.

Where to Stay

After much research and guidance from the reviews on Expedia.ca, we settled on the Westin Dawn Beach Resort located on the Dutch side of the island in an area called Oyster Pond. The hotel itself is a fabulous resort boasting a spa, 2 restaurants – Ocean and Aura, private beach, the most amazing staff you’ve ever met and more.

We were about a 2 minute drive from the French border and a short jaunt from Phillipsburg. The location couldn’t have been more perfect for our fun week of activities planned. This may sound sill but since we were on the Dutch side of the island,  it also meant we didn’t have to pack any European adaptors or fear of frying cables (something we’re prone to doing when we travel).

The warmest welcome from the Westin staff – they truly went above and beyond!

Our first day at Dawn Beach – located on the Westin Dawn Beach Resort and Spa property. I don’t think it gets any more relaxing than this!
What I loved about the resort was that you had the option of choosing between the beach or the pool. With chairs and cabanas available at both – there was really something for everyone. While we spent most days at our cabana by the beach, the swim up bar and infinity pool were some pretty serious contenders for hanging poolside.

Accessories for an afternoon of lounging cabana side at the resort. PS – how cute are the resort’s towels?

This was our view of Dawn Beach from the patio of our bedroom at the Westin Dawn Beach Resort. After reading various reviews on Expedia.ca of the property, we wanted to make the most of our week and the views – so we decided to upgrade to an Ocean View bedroom and yes, it was most definitely worth it!

The resort was absolutely perfect for our stay. There was a mix of young couples and families so we didn’t felt like one group was more dominant than the other. With activities planned almost everyday from aerobics to a pirate-themed buffet, there always seemed to be something going on. One of our favourites was a bonfire on the beach accompanied with s’mores :) The resort was kind enough to let us spend an afternoon at the spa on our first day to enjoy a couple’s massage and oh-my-word! We both walked out feeling completely relaxed, stress-free and were ready to kick off our vacation!
Where to Visit

After chatting with friends and family who had visited the island, one common recommendation was to secure a car rental for the week so when booking our vacation package through Expedia.ca, we made sure to book the car rental at the same time. Not only did this help save money towards our overall package, but getting to and from Budget (the car rental company) was a breeze after landing since we had already set it up in advance.

After spending a few days at Dawn Beach, we hopped in our car and headed to Orient Bay (pictured above) on the French side of the island or Saint Martin. While Dawn Beach was beautiful, this was stunning in its own way. Certainly more commercial than other beaches but the people watching was definitely worth it.

Candy coloured houses around Orient Bay beach!

Another must-do is a trip in and around Philipsburg on the Dutch side. With cruise ships coming and going from this port, it certainly felt the busiest compared to all the spots on the island. That being said, this is where you’re going to want to head for more commercial shopping on the island like jewelry or finding fashion brands at a discounted (duty-free!) rate.

Another activity on our list was to visit Pinel Island. A quaint, quiet island about 5 minutes off the coast of St. Maarten, you could paddle board or take a small boat across. The water is crystal blue and much calmer than any beach we’d been to so it made for the perfect day to relax. We set up at the umbrellas next to Karibuni restaurant which is definitely a must-do. From tropical drinks to amazing fare (try the seafood salad) – we were really impressed.

Towards the end of our trip, we decided to take the high-speed ferry from St. Maarten to St. Barth’s. Within 45 minutes we were docked and walking around the streets of the island which was perfect for a day trip. Rather than rent a car for the day, we opted for a cab to and from Baie de St. John. This is where you’ll find Eden Roc and Nikki Beach St. Barth (two super swanky beach front properties). If you’re looking to dodge the pricier spots for lunch in this area of town, we recommend visiting Kiki-e Mo for panini’s, salads and fresh juices that you can pack up for a picnic on the beach.

The view at Eden Roc

Boats in the harbour from Gustavia

Mini Cooper’s everywhere on St. Barth’s island – too adorable!
Strolling around St. Barth’s!
Scooters lined up along the main street of Gustavia, St. Barth’s. Not only is it fun to watch all the ships in harbour here but there’s some amazing shopping to be had. With duty-free price tags and brands such as Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Calypso St. Barth’s and more, there’s certainly some fun to be had ;)
Where to Eat

I must admit, the dining on-site at the Westin Dawn and Beach Resort was an experience in itself. Ocean restaurant served up an amazing boozy-brunch on Sunday and fresh juices and shakes each morning. Aura, the steak-house on-site, was also a great meal if you’re looking to stay local.

We did however, want to enjoy what the island had in store so here are some of our favourites in different parts of the island.

Grand Case: Situated on the French side of the island, the cuisine here certainly had unique flair to the meals. Bistrot Caraibes was intimate, swanky and was probably our favourite meal of the trip. Spiga, an Italian restaurant tucked away in a hidden street had rustic style fare and super friendly staff. Be sure to hit up Le Tastevin but make reservations a week or two in advance. French cuisine, sunset and an amazing wine list made for another perfect evening!

Philipsburg: Hit up the Lazy Lizard for drinks and light fare on the boardwalk. The food has a West-Indies twist with curry infusions that is out of this world!

Oyster Pond: Oyster Pond was also on the French side but was only a few minutes from our hotel. We ventured to Big Fish for patio-style dining, La Pavillon by the Sea for fantastic seafood and Dingy Dock Bar (you HAVE to get the ribs!).

Note – while the French side operates on the Euro and the Dutch side prefers USD, we found either currency was accepted across the island and never had an issue.

Rose and the perfect sunset!
Thank you to the team at Expedia.ca for partnering with us on this project.

Fedora: Old, similar | Poncho: c/o Dynamite | Turtleneck: Joe Fresh {old, similar} | Jeans: AG | Necklace: Express | Shoes: c/o Ted Baker {old, similar} | Bag: Chloe | Bracelets: c/o Brandy Pham | Sunglasses: Karen Walker

We snapped this outfit while heading out to lunch this past weekend in Montreal. I had a few business meetings but once things wrapped up, Adam and I decided to take a mini staycation in the city. Adam actually proposed in Montreal and we’d realized we hadn’t been back in almost 8 years!

Since the weather was a bit chilly and not exactly tourist friendly, it felt like we headed from one meal to the next in search of the perfect poutine :) If you’re headed there soon, I recommend Joe Beef, Garde Manger, Olive & Gourmando and Cafe Myriad! We definitely hope to be back in the spring for more amazing meals!

Salut Saint Martin

Sun, sand and relaxation – probably the three words anyone would use to describe an ideal beach vacation. These were the 3 words on our wish list when Adam and I started chatting about where wanted to go for our February vacation but were unsure on where to go.

Thankfully, our friends at Expedia.ca lent a hand in helping us choose the perfect destination. After giving them our wish-list they recommended a destination that offered sun, sand, great restaurants, culture and more: Saint Martin.

The Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort & Spa

Destination? Check. Hotel? Hmmm that’s a whole other ball game. Once again, Expedia.ca helped us narrow down some selections based on location, amenities and more to find the perfect stay for our trip: the Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort & Spa. With a full service spa, infinity pool, private beach area and more – it was a total no brainer for us ;)

The Westin is located on the Dutch side and close to popular hot-spots such as Philipsburg, Oyster Pond and much more. We’ve heard fabulous things about nearby restaurants so we’re super excited!

After spending vacations primarily fixated on one beach, we chatted about the option of a car rental so we could hop from one beach to the next and truly get a taste of the beaches on both the French and Dutch side. Knowing we’d now need a flight, hotel and car rental – we opted for a vacation package from Expedia.ca which provided peace of mind knowing we could arrive in our destination with all of our plans already arranged.

Shop in St. Bart’s

While hitting the beach and relaxing in a comfy chair is definitely on our to-do list, we thought we’d spend one day visiting a nearby island. After doing some research, we found that St. Bart’s and Anguilla are short ferry rides away – great for a fun day trip. It didn’t take long for me to realize that St. Bart’s offered tax-free shopping and being home to names such as Louis Vuitton, Hermes and more – you can guess where we’re headed ;) So with a simple 1-2 click on Expedia, we had a fun day trip planned!

We’ve got a bit of a countdown at this point (42 days) but we’re oh-so pumped to have something to look forward to this winter. I’ve even included my getaway wishlist below of what I hope to be packing come February!

We want to thank the amazing team at Expedia in advance not only for helping us but for sending us on this tropical vacation. We’re oh-so-grateful for the opportunity! For more information on where Expedia.ca is sending us or to book your own tropical getaway this winter, start customizing your own vacation package here!

Hat: J Crew | Dress: c/o LOFT | Sunglasses: Karen Walker | Necklace: c/o Julie Vos | Bracelets: c/o Brandy Pham | Watch: Michael Kors | Bag: Chloe | Shoes: Soludos | Ring: c/o Julie Vos

We made it to Morocco! It took 3 flights, 3 continents and a 2 hour drive but we landed in Chefchouen for the first leg of our trip. I can’t even begin to explain to you how beautiful this town is. It’s certainly reminiscent of Greece with the painted blue towns and winding streets which felt familiar and so welcoming! We strolled around the medina on the first day and got ourselves situated with the town.

If you plan on visiting Morocco, I HIGHLY recommend this town ;)  We snapped these pics right before dinner one night in town. This dress was perfect for strolling around town and paired well with a scarf or white denim jacket. I’m also loving that I’ll be able to pair it with tights and a long cardigan for the fall weather we’ll have when we get back home! (UGH) In the meantime, stay tuned for more looks this week on the blog or follow along on Instagram and snapchat (krystin_lee) for what we see/do/eat in Morocco!
