Travel Guide: Detroit

So often, we’re caught up in trying to figure out a long weekend destination that requires a short haul flight or a drive time of 7-8 hours or less. This past Labour Day weekend, Adam, myself, Kass and her husband were looking for a getaway destination we didn’t have to fly to (hello third trimester) and was relatively close. With Chicago at the top of our list, we worried the drive to and back would be exhausting but we wanted to feel like we were somewhere that felt different from home. I can’t quite remember who but someone tossed out the idea of Detroit and immediately we were sold.
Located about 3.5 hours away from Toronto, we knew it was the kind of destination you could tackle in 2-3 days. I will say, the drive getting to Detroit isn’t the prettiest – expect empty farm land for most of your drive – but the destination is well worth it.
Why We Loved It
Many of our friends joked when we mentioned we were going to Detroit. There’s a lot of misconceptions about the safety of the area, the economical status or point blank we were asked – ‘What are you going to do there?’. Following the economic crisis, the city has pulled itself from the ashes and emitted what I would describe as a Brooklyn vibe (circa 2010-2012, before it became too cool lol). With artists, students and community comrades banding together, the city has a neighbourhood feel to it. Our adoration for the city grew with each mural wall we spotted, amazing meal after the next or brewery we hit on our list. If you’re looking for a city that offers art, cuisine, shopping, sightseeing and can be tackled in 2-3 days, then Detroit is your kind of destination.
Where to Stay
The city certainly has a plethora of options available for various budgets. From the Westin to Holiday Inn and various AirBnB options, there was endless solutions. We opted to stay at the Trumbull and Porter hotel. We scored a great deal on Expedia and liked that the property offered bikes, was nearby coffee shops, brewery and close to the downtown core. A very hipster-esque property, it felt a little too ‘cool’ for our preference. A renovated motel from the 1950s, it certainly has its appeal. I will caution however that the walls are quite thin and if you have noisy neighbours, expect to join in on the fun or pack some ear plugs.
The next time we visit Detroit, I would likely opt for a stay at The Siren Hotel or Detroit Foundation Hotel. We had the chance to pop into the Siren Hotel and the lobby is most definitely Instagram goals from its velvet settee to candy pink cups at Populace Coffee. Detroit Foundation Hotel had a more edgy vibe to it but the recent renovation oozes a very hip and cool feeling.
Getting Around
We drove to the city from Toronto and relied on our car for most of the weekend. The temperatures were unbearable and walking wasn’t much of an option. A lot of locations are quite spread out amongst the grid so I’d suggest Uber, taking a car or relying on the bike or Scooter program that is being piloted in the city.
Where to Eat – Breakfast

Gold Cash Gold: This came highly recommended from so many of you so it HAD to be on our list. From the libations to the breakfast options to the dessert varieties (Maple Syrup and Strawberry Donut!), this place hit the spot. I loved the Shakshouka and Adam couldn’t get enough of the chicken and waffles.
Outfit details can be found here.
The Hudson Cafe: This spot was more of plan B since many restaurants were closed on Labour Day. It was a very average breakfast spot and nothing jumped out at any of us. I would pass on a visit.
On our list but never made it: Dime Store, Wright & Company, Rose’s Fine Foods,
Where to Eat – Lunch

Green Dot Stables: Eating ‘hamburger’ meat at a horse stable might seem off to you (it was to me) but I promise it’s worth it. With a menu stacked with $2 and $3 sliders, it’s definitely a joint you want to visit hungry. We loved the Cheeseburger, Fried Chicken Ceaser, Catfish, Buffalo Chicken, Fried Chicken and Grilled Cheese options. Opt for the Mystery Meat of the day if you’re up for it. And consider yourself warned – this is not a fancy joint!
Slows BBQ: We ate at Slows BBQ for dinner one evening but I’m going to recommend it as a lunch spot – if you go. Truthfully, we were disappointed with the meal. We tried the ‘3rd best Sandwich in the USA’ and found it underwhelming, the BBQ options weren’t life changing and the service was meh. If you must go, I suggest grabbing something at their Slow’s To Go location or opting for a better spot altogether.
Clementina: Located in the heart of the downtown core, it was a pop up taco joint that had the cutest bistro chairs set up to enjoy the outside. I’m not sure how long they’ll be open with winter coming, but I do recommend a visit if you can. With Latin inspired fare, I suggest the tacos and Patatas Bravas.
On our list but we never made it: Lover’s Only, Supino Pizzeria, 2941 Street Food and Royale with Cheese
Where to Eat – Coffee Shops & Cafe’s

Astro Coffee: Grab a coffee here while waiting for your table at Gold Cash Gold. It’s not the cutest cafe but the coffee was worth it.
Mootown Ice Cream Shop: An Instagram-worthy spot, grab a pink milkshake and snap away on their sprinkle tables.
For The Love of Sugar: Another darling cafe in the city, enjoy a cup of coffee here or a sweet treat in this Parisian inspired cafe.
Anthology Coffee: This spot was around the corner from our hotel and a must do. Not only did they take the time to paint their brick exterior pink – WINNING – but they had one of the best cups of coffee around. You’ll also notice Anthology’s grounds are served at various other spots in town.
Find outfit details here.

Populace Coffee: Located in the lobby of The Siren Hotel, grab and go or enjoy on the darling furniture in the lobby and enjoy the pink cups!
We couldn’t get there, but FOLK looked super cute!
Where to Eat – Dinner
Selden Standard: This restaurant totally knocked our socks off. Literally everything we ordered off the menu was delicious and super filling. Try the Flatbread and Chicken Sugo if they still have it! And if you can, a seat on the back patio is darling on a summer’s night!
The Apparatus Room: I popped in here for a late lunch/early dinner one day. The decor was fantastic and totally set the mood for this restaurant. Whether you want to sip on a cocktail and play board games or you came to dine in, it’s got a fun atmosphere. The Crispy Fried Cauliflower and Almond Crusted Chicken would be my choices.
On our list but we never made it: Lady of the House, Takoi, Townhouse, Pegasus Taverna and The Whitney
Where to Drink – Bars, Breweries & Distilleries

Batch Brewing: We drank and dined at this local spot near our hotel. The drinks were good but the fare was so so. I recommend the Shrimp Po Boy.
Two James Spirits: We ducked into Two James while strolling around Corktown. The distillery isn’t very large but anything made with their in-house Gin was delightful.
Candy Bar: Located in The Siren Hotel, this is every girl’s dream bar. A pink adorned bar with disco lights and velvet settee sofas, it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. While the cocktails were pricier than most joints, the atmosphere and unique twists on recipes made up for it.
Eastern Market Brewery: We stumbled into this spot while wandering around the Eastern Market admiring the mural walls. We loved sipping on beers and playing bean bag toss in the back alley. It’s a relaxing spot to visit on a hot way!
On our list but we never made it: Detroit Shipping Company, Grey Ghost, Motor City Brewing Works and Sugar House
What to do in Detroit

Corktown: Stroll around Corktown for up and coming breweries, coffee shops and gawk at the abandoned buildings in the area. It’s crazy to see the gentrification that’s happening in this area one storefront at a time.
RiverWalk: Walking alongside the water was so picturesque on a sunny day. You can see Windsor from across the way and shockingly the water looks almost Caribbean blue on a sunny day.
Eastern Market: One of my favourite areas of town, the Eastern Market is a bustling area of town. With a local farmers market set up on Saturday and Sunday, grab produce or fixings for lunch, hit up one of the breweries in the neighbourhood or take endless selfies on all the mural walls in this area. We loved using this website to find the latest Murals in the Market
Midtown: Another fun pocket to stroll around in, Midtown featured the Shinola headquarters, Jack White’s Record Label, breweries and cute local boutiques.
Guardian Building: Take a visit to this building and be sure to look up. Admire the aztec design on the ceilings or the art deco lobby.
Z Garage: Keep an eye out for this multi-level parking garage in the city’s core. It doubles as an art installation and each level boasts a different colour scheme. Climb or ride to the top for my favourite colour combo and score a great view of the city.

Walls of Detroit

We had a blast exploring Detroit over the weekend! We ventured from one neighbourhood to another and snapped photos of ALL the mural walls along the way (there are so many!). I’m working on a travel guide and hoping to have it launch next week if possible. In the meantime, I’ll be soaking up the heat in breezy dresses like this until we have to leave for work in coats, sweaters, jackets, scarves, UGH I’m sad already! Hope everyone had a great long weekend!

4 Days in London

We’ve been home for quite some time since London but with moving, summer plans and life, this travel guide felt like it took forever to compile. I was so pumped to get to spend 4 full days in London. This was my 3rd time visiting but a first for Adam.

Getting There
I made the mistake for this trip of flying into Gatwick after seeing a much lower price per ticket than flying into Heathrow. That being said, we didn’t anticipate the 90-pound cab ride to get us into the heart of the city (which translates to $200 CAD). There is a train option from the airport but with 2 pieces of luggage and sheer exhaustion from the red-eye flight, we just wanted to get into town as soon as possible.

I do recommend adding on $400 in cab fare/$200 in train fare to get yourself into the city. I forget the fees from Heathrow, but I do know this airport is located closer to London.

Getting Around
We enjoyed a mix of cab rides, Uber and the tube getting around London. We would have enjoyed the subway more but to be honest, the fare was just under 10 pounds per person and most Uber rides would cost about the same, so we’d often opt for that route instead. And don’t be afraid to explore London by foot. Getting lost in Chelsea, Notting hill or Kensington is often one of my favourite past times to do in the city.

When to Go
This is the second time I’ve visited during the May long weekend in Canada (around May 24). The weather is warm enough for a t-shirt or dress during the day and requires a light jacket or trench by night. This time also happens to coincide with the Chelsea Flower Show. Storefronts, hotels and boutiques are covered in faux flowers that make for the most stunning photos.

Where to Stay

I wanted to switch things up for this visit and we chose to stay in the Kensington area at The Kensington Hotel. Boutique in feeling, this property was downright stunning. From the front porch seating to high tea in the parlour, it had the most stunning décor inside and out. To our surprise, we also found the exterior covered in florals in honour of the Chelsea Flower Show – so stunning!

I would say the room size was on average for London hotel sizes (small!) but there were enough nooks and crannies in the room to accommodate for our luggage and carry-ons. We skipped breakfast at our hotel, but I heard great things about high tea on premises if you’re interested.

We did love the locale of the property. There were great coffee shops nearby, the Subway was a 7-8-minute walk away and restaurants were nearby or a short Uber ride away. And let’s not kid ourselves – the photo opportunities at this spot are too cute to resist.

What to See/Do:

Adam wasn’t particularly interested in seeing the major spots of London, so we skipped out on Trafalgar Square, riding the London Eye or the Towers of London. I do recommend looking into the construction time frame of Big Ben as it was completely hidden in scaffolding when we visited and heard it may be the case for some time.

British Museum: We spent a rainy morning at the British Museum. From the Rosetta stone to Ancient History, there certainly was something for everyone. As with most museums in London, entrance admission is free (you can donate an amount you see fit). On my list for our next visit? National Gallery and Tate Modern.

Buckingham Palace: Yes, we paid a visit. Yes, it was insanely crowded. But it was a must do for the area, especially since Adam had never seen it.

Notting Hill to Primrose Hill: This is my favourite neighborhood to get lost in. We spent an entire morning just roaming around the streets, admiring the colourful doors, pastel buildings, popping into boutiques and more. I spent hours saving spots I wanted to hunt down but to be honest, the area isn’t as large as it appears and finding ‘the pink door’ isn’t as difficult to find as expected.

Chelsea: This was new for me, but we spent a few hours one afternoon wandering around the Chelsea neighborhood. The stunning townhouses, boutiques, perfectly sculpted gardens and more are totally swoon worthy.

Covent Garden: While this neighborhood errs on the touristy side, there’s still something to be said for the neighborhood and vibe. Anticipate major retailers and small stores alike.

Kensington Gardens: The rose bushes at Kensington Gardens are a must-see if you visit in early spring. I stumbled on this park with my sister on our last visit and we were so enamoured with the landscape and rolling hills.

Hyde Park: One of our favourite afternoons spent in London, was visiting a local Tesco for rose, cheese, crackers and snacks and enjoying them in the park. Be sure to look for the swans in the pond – it makes for a picturesque afternoon.

Oxford Street: If shopping is on your agenda, then Oxford Street is your go-to. With almost every luxury boutique you can think of – including the department stores – it’s luxury at its finest. I recommend grabbing a coffee or a pint on a patio here for the people watching – you never know who you’ll see.

Café’s & High Tea

Elan Café: There are two locations of Elan Café in the city, but I recommend visiting the spot-on Brompton Road as it seemed to be less busy and had a few number of tables along their infamous flower wall.

Saint Aymes Café: We stumbled on Saint Aymes Café after a stroll through Hyde Park. I highly recommend their rainbow cake and trying to snag a seat outside. Visiting around 3-4PM on a weekday was the sweet spot for getting a good seat!

Spatisserie Dorchester: I was mulling over options for high tea and ended up on the Dorchester Hotel. Be sure to ask for high tea at the Spatisserie rather than the lobby. We were the only ones in this stunning setting, had a waiter all to ourselves which included some extra treats and the perfect photo opp!

Sketch: I had the opportunity to visit Sketch on a previous visit with my sis. They were hosting a special during our visit that was quite pricey, so we passed on the opportunity, but it would still be my first vote. From the velvet pink sofas to tea variety and overall vibe of the restaurant, it’s just too good to pass up

Peggy Porschen Cakes: Beware of the bloggers lol! This pink spot is a mecca for all influencers and bloggers so if you’re hoping for that perfect table outside, be prepared to wait. Truthfully, I don’t find the desserts to be OMG-Amazing, but the atmosphere is adorable and who can say no to a pink building with café chairs out front?

Cocktails

American Bar: A swanky cocktail spot in the Savoy. This was actually voted the best bar in 2017 and is one of the longest running cocktail bars. We stepped in here before dinner one night and were impressed with the selection and atmosphere.

Dandelyan: After walking passed Big Ben and the London Eye, we stumbled onto Dandelyan bar. This was a must-do this visit, and we LOVED it! From the botanic inspired menu and helpful bartenders, this was a big win. The colour scheme (emerald and pink) is also interior goals!

On our list but couldn’t make it: The Connaught BarThe OrangeThe WellsDuke’s Bar and Sky Garden.

Where to Dine
Aubaine Selfridges: After doing some damage in Selfridges, this lunch spot is a MUST do! Try to snag a seat in the back, tucked around the corner to dine under the faux-wisteria.

Bob Bob Ricard: I came here on a previous visit with sissy hoping to spot the ‘Press for Champagne’ button at the table. We adored the décor and offerings, but we did find the meal to be on the pricey side of things. I’d suggest stopping in for a cocktail or their Sunday special fare.

Cecconi’s: I secretly hate that this spot is a chain of restaurants, but we loved the fare in Miami so much and head so many amazing things about this spot, we just had to. I must admit, the Italian fare was unreal and SO SO worth it! We dined for supper, but I do think a seat outside on the patio for lunch may have been better suited for this spot.

The Champion Pub: We wanted something a little more casual one evening and a friend recommended The Champion. We enjoyed a pint outside while waiting for a table and then sat inside for dinner by the open window and loved it. From the music to the people, it was an awesome time!

Farm Girl Cafe: A must-do brunch spot! I highly recommend the lavender latte’s. This is a great joint to visit while touring the Notting Hill area.

Temper: A BBQ inspired restaurant, this spot was Adam’s pick. I’m not usually a fan of red meat but dang this place had it going on. The popcorn appetizer to the ragu and charcuterie board was out of this world!

Dishoom – The one thing we knew we wanted to find in London was some stellar Indian food. SO many of you let me know this was your favourite spot (including locals) and oh-my-word it did not disappoint. We had the chicken ruby, paneer tikka, biryani and the chili cheese toast. You also must try to the Kohinoor Fizz!

On our list for next visit: PixDuck and WaffleLocanda LocatelliThe Holly BushThe FlaskIsabel RestaurantBluebirdDalloway TerraceChiltern Firehouse and Breddos Tacos.

Must See Boutiques
Fortnum & Mason: Whether its tea, chocolates, cookies or a good browse, Fortnum & Mason is a must see in London. The department store is decked out with the most adorable gifts and goodies. I haven’t tried but their high tea is also supposed to be top notch!

Wild at Heart: You’ve likely seen this spot-on Instagram, but the floral boutique is worth a walk by and a snap or two when in London.

Travel Guide: Dubai

It may have taken a few months, but I’m so pumped to finally share our guide to Dubai on the blog. We had the opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai from February to March earlier this year and had an AMAZING time. From the food to the sights and the culture, it completely surpassed our expectations. You can read more about our stay in Abu Dhabi here.

Getting There
I must admit, the flight getting to Dubai wasn’t as horrendous as I had chalked it up to be in my head. We flew with Emirates Airlines (highly recommend!) and a direct flight was just under 13 hours headed there and about 14.5 hours on our way home. We booked economy seats and were pleasantly surprised with the additional leg room, meal options and service in general. If I have the opportunity to travel with the airline again (even at an additional rate), I would not hesitate to do so!

Out & About
Since we knew tackling Abu Dhabi was on our list, we opted for a car rental to cut back on unnecessary cab rides and uber fares. A trip to Abu Dhabi would cost about $250 CAD and we were able to obtain a car rental for slightly more than that so we figured it was a great deal. We found road signs and navigation to be relatively straight forward. Most cars do not come equipped with GPS and cell phone plans in Dubai can be pricey so plan in advance for using your data.

Where To Stay
We had the pleasure of staying at the One & Only Royal Mirage during our stay in Dubai. Truth be told, this was my first time staying with a property under the One & Only banner. I had long heard stories of its boutique approach to accommodations and that the customer service was top notch. One & Only actually has three separate hotels within Dubai. There is One & Only Arabian Court, One & Only Royal Mirage and One & Only The Palm. Each offer a unique design and experience for visitors but attention to detail and service were the same throughout. Our hotel was connected to Arabian Court but since the property was so expansive, they had a coach bus shuttle system that constantly ran throughout the property if you didn’t want to walk along the grounds from one end to the other.

Maxi Dress | Chloe Sunglasses | Kayu Tote

The Grounds
Adorned with Arabesque influence, the initial approach to the property is enough to make your jaw drop. The initial entry into the foyer commands attention with a mosaic ceiling is covered in gold details. I couldn’t get over the sprawling grounds on the property and the gardens were absolutely stunning to stroll around. And don’t get me started on the beach! The parasols over each set of beach chairs made for the most picture-perfect backdrop.

Interiors
We had the pleasure of staying in an Executive Suite Bedroom, and One & Only isn’t playing around when it comes to suites. From a double door closet, desk area, dining nook, living room and double doors to our own bedroom, the first impression was naturally, “Oh my word.” The room even included a his and her wardrobe closets. The bathroom was insanely oversized with a stand-up shower, soaker tub and double sinks. Last but not least, the balcony view of the property and beach made for an amazing way to wind down after a day sightseeing or at the beach.

Amenities
Whether it’s soaking up the sun at DRIFT beach, enjoying water sports or even paying a visit to the spa, there’s plenty to do on site. I had the pleasure of enjoying a Traditional Hammam experience at the One & Only spa. I had passed up this opportunity in Morocco and wanted to take advantage while I could. I must say, this spa might go down as one the prettiest and most serene I’ve ever seen. And the treatment certainly was an experience. From the massage to the cleansing of the skin, I felt like a new woman. Beware though – I recommend one of these treatments before you hit the beach and not after you tan your skin!

Dining
Whether you’re staying on the property or not, a visit to Celebrities for breakfast is a MUST DO if you’re visiting Dubai. I have ever seen a more extensive daily buffet in my life. Whether it was 10 fresh squeezed juice options to 12 jams or every fruit you could imagine possible – the buffet had it all. The menu was extensive, and their cappuccinos were to-die-for. I also adored that they came with camel art every morning!

Tagine was another great option for Moroccan fare on site – their tagine was great, and the live music was a perfect touch. Eauzone offered Asian cuisine and dining amongst water canals made for such a romantic spot. Another must do is sunset cocktails at The Jetty Lounge. I loved enjoying a glass of rose, apps to snack on and an overall great vibe as we watched the sunset over The Palm.

See & Do

A Camel Ride: Cliché, yes but you can’t go to Dubai and not experience this. We missed our chance in Morocco and agreed a sunset tour would be on our bucket list. We used Ocean Air Travels and were super impressed with the entire experience. The photo options at sunset are gorgeous and getting to soak up the Arabian Desert at dusk is such a serene experience. I do recommend packing a blanket for the evening and a second for under your bum – the ride isn’t the smoothest!
Free People Midi Dress | Rattan Crossbody | Espadrilles

each Club: Forget the sightseeing, shopping and anything else you’ve got planned and be sure to plan an afternoon at DRIFT beach club. From loungers on the beach to poolside swings, we had a blast soaking up the sun here for an afternoon.
Madinat Jumeirah Abra Tour: Tour the town by boat and catch sights of the Burj Al Arab and the Madinat Jumeirah property on a traditional Abra. Another great option for capturing an Instagram-worthy snap! Be sure to visit the modern souk here too.

City Walk: We loved strolling around City Walk around dusk or after dinner. From coffee shops to ice cream parlours and more, there’s so much happening that it’s a must do spot.

Malls: Nobody does shopping like the UAE. Whether it’s the Dubai Mall or the Mall of the Emirates, no visit would be complete without a stop into one of these spots. From hair salons to aquariums and restaurants and even ice skating rinks, there’s literally a ton to see and do. For my shoe lovers, you must visit Level Shoes in the Dubai Mall – you’ve never seen anything like it!

Dubai Fountain: Head to the Dubai Mall one evening and be sure to visit one of the timed fountain shows in front of the Burj Khalifa. Tip! Head to the Apple store and score an unobstructed view from their balcony.

Jumeirah Beach: A great public beach with views of the Palm and Burj Al Arab. You MUST pay a visit to SALT burgers if you’re there for the afternoon. Stroll along the boardwalk and feast your eyes on all the food trucks and tuk -tuks parked beachside.

Miracle Garden: A sight for sore eyes, the Miracle Garden is a dream. With floral installations throughout, you’ll definitely want to bring your camera to snap a few (thousand) photos of the sights. Pack your patience if you’re hoping to snap a shot in the heart archway.

Similar Gingham Dress | Wedges | Aviators

Restos
Mythos: So many friends had raved about the Greek food at this place and they were bang on. Highly recommend for authentic cuisine (the owner is an ex Pat) and a cute ambiance.

SALT: If you make your way to Jumeirah Beach, follow the boardwalk until you get to SALT burgers. They were oh so tasty with a side order of fries. Don’t forget an ice cream to go!

Ting Irie: You wouldn’t necessarily associate Caribbean cuisine with the UAE, but their Curry Goat and Fried Chicken were amazing!

Flamingo Room: Another insta-worthy spot, we dropped by for cocktails one afternoon but instantly regretted we didn’t stick around for a late lunch or dinner based on the fare we saw headed out from the kitchen.

Operation Falafel: A great lunch spot that we stumbled upon one day before heading to the beach!

Matto: A simple approach to Italian that was oh-so good! The atmosphere was relaxed and super casual. We loved their wood burning oven pizza!

101 Dining and Lounge Bar: A MUST! Make a reservation at this restaurant on the Palm for stunning views of Dubai from the water. Bust out your best #OOTD when it comes to this spot and crowd!

STAY (One & Only The Palm): We had the opportunity to dine at STAY in One & Only The Palm. A restaurant by Michelin Star chef, Yannick Alleno, this French restaurant is definitely one to remember. We even had the option to head to a curated dessert bar where a pastry chef walks you through the evening’s offerings, customizes it for

Café’s and Bars
Parlour Café: For all my pink lovers, this café is a must do. A little off the beaten path but they sure do make up for it with killer cappuccinos and the cutest serving dishes.

Angelina: An upscale tea-room that resembles the likes of L’aduree, it was too cute to pass up!

Mitts & Trays: An uber cute café with brunch options. It’s located in City Walk and close to the malls and all the happenings for a quick bite.

Skyview Bar: We saved the best for last and opted for a cocktail at the Skyview Bar on our last night. Located at the top of the Burj Al Arab building, make a reservation in advance of your visit if you’re looking for a table by the window. Truth be told, the cocktails were pricier than we had bargained for, but the view helped ease the sticker shock when they delivered the check.

On our list but we never made it: Café Des Artistes, The Brass Coffee & Community, Falla, Maison Mathis, L’ETO and Farzi Café.

To say we had an amazing time would be an understatement. We’ll definitely be back and can’t wait to see what else is new in this sprawling town! Catch more behind-the-scenes in our vlog here:

48 Hours in Abu Dhabi

If I were to ask you what your bucket list destination was – what would you say? I often hear Hawaii, Paris, Maldives, and more. For myself, the UAE is a location that has always intrigued me, specifically, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. From popular films, to inspiring images on Pinterest, it’s impossible not to conjure up images in your head of luxury, intrigue, magical sunsets and skyscrapers galore – and you wouldn’t be wrong.

Getting There
We flew direct from Toronto to Dubai with Emirates. If you ever have the chance to fly with this airline – even in economy- I would highly recommend it. From the extended leg room to curated meals and infectiously happy staff, it truly was the kind of experience that makes you feel like your vacation begins on the plane ride – and not when you step off. I should note that there is an airport in Abu Dhabi but with no direct flights offered from Toronto, we decided it was best to get ourselves to the UAE and arrange alternate means once we landed.

Situated about an hour’s drive away from Dubai, travellers have various options to get to/from Abu Dhabi. Knowing we wanted the flexibility throughout our stay, we decided to rent a car from the Dubai airport and make the drive ourselves. We felt quite comfortable driving around Dubai and on all major roads in Abu Dhabi. Most signs are written in Arabic and English and Google Maps was a tremendous help. Do note that most rental cars do not come equipped with GPS (unlike other countries) and foreign cell phone carriers can pay an escalated price for data.

We did find the roads a bit trickier to navigate once we exited the highways in Abu Dhabi and needed to locate our hotel. Thankfully, there are a lot of roundabouts and patient drivers in the area.

Notes about Abu Dhabi
I had a lot of friends and coworkers ask similar questions on dress and grooming, my feelings as a Western woman travelling to the UAE and more. Truthfully, I felt that Dubai was quite liberal in terms of what was acceptable for attire and my interactions with everyone in general. I still felt comfortable in Abu Dhabi but I will note that since tourism is not as rampant as it is in Dubai, there tends to be a more conservative approach to these matters.

For example, you’ll see far less alcohol served in restaurants to locals, less risks being taken with attire and more. Out of respect, I was always mindful of what I wore in public but never felt I had to hold back from say – enjoying a glass of wine with my meal if the table beside me was not partaking.

The local currency is dirham but the United States dollar and all credit cards were commonly accepted. As for meals and general budgeting, I found most items to be of similar value to what you can expect to find at home. So for example, a dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant with appetizers, mains and 2 glasses of wine would cost approximately $100-$125.

Where to Stay
We had the pleasure of staying with at the Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. How does one even begin to describe the experience? Immediate words that come to mind are opulence, grandeur and hospitality. Situated on the Al Maqta Creek, you’re welcomed with the most beautiful sunrise on one side of the property and greeted with a stunning sunset over the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Overlooking the property from the balcony in our room!

This Ritz Carlton property truly had something for everyone. From suites in the main building overlooking the canal to private villas with your own pool – their breadth of accommodations were refreshing. I think one of my favourite touches in the property was the attention and detail paid to the gardens and architecture. Reminiscent of Versailles, the manicured trees and bougainvillea were breathtaking and made for the most pleasant and aromatic evening walks.

We spent two nights in the Executive Suite overlooking the Canal and it was beyond dreamy to say the least. With a seating area large enough to host a party, two balconies, powder room in addition to a large ensuite and a cozy oversized bed – we were in for a real treat. And it must be stated for the record – the UAE does hospitality like no other. Every staff member greets you so politely, makes an effort to learn your name, and constantly goes above and beyond.

A little tired our first day – and a lot jet lagged – we decided to relax on our first full day in Abu Dhabi. We loved the amenities discovered on the property like a beach to stroll on, the ability to hang with the crowds at the pool or lounge quietly at the Adults-only swim area, private cabanas and more.

One offering we always take advantage of when visiting Ritz Carlton properties is the Club Lounge. This particular suite was well stocked with culinary menu items, full bar, wifi, televisions and sweeping views of the Canal. I loved coming here to catch up on emails, enjoy a world-class cappuccino and order a second helping of the tastiest omelettes.

Where to Eat
Giornette: Friday’s are ALL about brunch in Dubai and Giornette’s offerings were over-the-top. From fresh fruit to omelette creation to a carving station – they had it all. And don’t get me started on their fresh juice bar! A must-do if you’re in the area and try to get a spot outside!

Cho Gao Marina Walk: We were craving Asian inspired cuisine and this restaurant came highly recommended. We loved getting to sit outside in the harbor and enjoy our meal. We loved the banana blossom salad, Thai roasted red curry and braised short ribs in coconut milk.

Punjab Grill: Hands down, this was our favourite restaurant by far in Abu Dhabi. I’ll be honest, we’re not ones to feast on Indian in a fine dining experience at home but this came highly recommended so we figured it was worth a shot and boy, was it ever. Every-single-item on the menu was spectacular and we polished it off.

Venetian Village: If you’re staying at the Ritz Carlton property – or any other hotel in the area – I recommend a visit to the Venetian Village on any given evening. It seemed to be the hub for local dining options and most spots with tables situated on the water.

Villa Toscana: Craving Italian in the UAE? Then this is your go-to spot. We dined here for a quick lunch and were pleasantly surprised at how authentic the meal tasted!

On our list but we never made it: Sayad, Li Beirut, Mezzaluna and Finz.

What to do

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: If you’ve made the trek out to Abu Dhabi, chances are you’re here for a peek at the Grand Mosque. One of the third largest in the world, it certainly commands attention with its grandeur and beauty. Some insider tips we learned:
– Friday visits are limited to the afternoons for non-worshippers
– For best lighting, we recommend visiting towards the end of the day
– An Abaya will be provided to you if you do not have your own (they’re blue and lilac)
– You must wear full length pants or skirts – even if you are wearing the Abaya
– Pack your patience: crowds looked busy, photographers were abundant and getting a clear shot
Louvre Abu Dhabi: No Paris? No problem. The recently opened Louvre features revolving exhibits from around the world and the current one featuring works of art from Versailles is a must see.

Emirates Palace: So this could also double as a suggested accommodation, but the hotel itself is worth seeing. The sprawling grounds, restaurants and views were insane. We never had the chance to try it but their high tea is also to be the best of its kind in the area.

Marina Mall: Malls aren’t just a place to bide your time in the UAE, they’re institutions. The Marina Mall and entertainment complex is certainly a spot where one can pass the time …or hours…or days at that.

Nurai Island: This was the one activity we were most looking forward to while visiting Abu Dhabi. A private island surrounded by turquoise waiters and a ritzy hotel is accessible with a day pass and offers access to the luxe grounds. Sadly, we were rained out and didn’t have the chance to go but I would highly recommend if you’re in the area.

Summary
If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Dubai, Abu Dhabi is the perfect getaway stop. I didn’t reference it in this blog post but there are countless attractions in the area such as Ferrari World and more to keep one occupied. I can’t say we’ll be back in the very near future but we certainly enjoyed our stay.

I’m thrilled to share a small video of our stay at the property. Be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel for more content to come from Dubai, tutorials and more!

Sandals South Coast: A Dream Come True

One question which always makes me chuckle is where Adam and I went for our honeymoon. To say our honeymoon was a bit of a bust is no joke: we booked a questionable property in Miami in the middle of hurricane season and spent most of the week without power and soaking wet from all the rain. We’ve always joked that we’ve spent every year making it up with amazing vacations.

While we love exploring cities like Istanbul, Marrakech, Barcelona and more – there’s something to be said for a relaxing beach vacation. When we were invited to stay at the Sandals South Coast property in South Coast Jamaica (about 90 minutes outside Montego Bay), we were certainly intrigued. With the Maldives or Bora Bora on our wish list, getting to these destinations isn’t exactly a hop, skip and a flight away. To think we could stay in similar accommodations on a non-stop flight (at less than 5 hours), we were immediately checking in with work to see when we could get to this new property.

Opening in the beginning of December 2017, Sandals South Coast is the third property to welcome the over-the-water-bungalow suites. Their sister properties in St. Lucia and Sandals Royal Caribbean (also in Jamaica) also feature these stunning accommodations.

Getting There
With many airlines offering direct flights, we landed in less than 5 hours at the Montego Bay airport. Met with a greeter, we were escorted through the customs process with our own assistant and taken to the Sandals booth within the airport. A rum punch and bottle of Red Stripe later, we found ourselves in a brand new 7-series BMW and a personal driver en-route to the property. Oh and let’s not forget the car was stocked with fresh fruit, chilled water, champagne and snacks. When any vacation starts off with this much attention to detail, you know you’re in for a treat. Traffic can be hit and miss in the Montego Bay area so anticipate a drive time of up to 2 hours to the property if you land in or around rush hour.

The Staff
We were warmly greeted by the staff at Sandals including the team (yep, I said it – team!) of butlers that would be taking care of us during our stay. As we were driven (in a golf cart) to our bungalow, they were sure to point out the restaurants on site, suggestions on what to order, activities we could participate in, where to locate the bar and of course an introduction to our suite.

In partnership with the Guild of English Butlers, the Butler service is like any other we’ve experienced at any other property. We met Tiffany and Fabian who let us know they’d be more than happy to assist with anything we’d need during our stay. Just some of the services they were offered included: the overseeing of our check in and check out, arranging for your dinner reservations, a refresh on your drinks (either at the beach or poolside), collect laundry, unpacking your luggage, arrange for any romantic dinner set-ups, expedite any room service orders and that’s just to name a few.

The Accommodation
After getting out of our golf cart and catching a glimpse of the bungalows, I had an actual jaw-dropping moment. From the crystal-blue water to the dreamy walk down the boardwalk to each individual room, it was something straight out of a magazine ad. Upon walking into the room, the suite features a refrigerator, and stocked bar with premium spirits such as Hendrick’s Gin, Mondavi Wine, Grey Goose Vodka and more. You’re then lead into a space room with chairs, a King size bed, closet, enclosed toilet area, his and her sinks and an oversized shower.

Our favourite part of the interior was the see-through glass floor, which provided access to the turquoise blue waters beneath the villa. Every morning I enjoyed my coffee while watching the fish and Adam swim by!

And just when we thought our expectations had been blown away, Fabian opened the curtain and led us outside… the oversized patio included an outdoor shower, tub, lounge chairs, hammock and two oversized chairs and a snorkelling equipment.

Aside from the private cabanas, this is where we spent majority of our time. We enjoyed breakfast served on the patio every morning and sipped on cocktails while watching the sunset. And since disconnecting from the office wasn’t an option, I didn’t feel like I had to miss out when catching up on conference calls or email via WiFi from the patio.
Oh and that tub? H-E-A-V-E-N. We came home one day after the beach to find the tub filled with an enormous amount of bubbles, rose petals and a bottle of champagne waiting for us. I mean, I can’t make this stuff. This place oozes romance!

Not one to struggle with verbiage, I can’t help but describe the room and this view as magical, picturesque and breathtaking. We kept joking it was a total pinch me moment. Views and interiors aside, another amenity we loved utilizing during our stay with the room-specific cell phone our suite came with. Whether it was requesting more Gin in our cabana, placing our breakfast order for room service the next day or securing a time at the spa – we could simply text Fabian or Tiffany any request – at any point in the day – and communicate anywhere from the property.

The Resort and Amenities

As tempting as it was to stay locked up in our bungalow, we were eager to explore what else the property had to offer. With a fresh gin and tonic in one hand and our camera in the other, we decided to trek up and down the beach to see what we could find. I’ll be honest, while the property doesn’t look to be that large from the outside, you really do grasp how much the property offers after a walk around the grounds.

Sprawling across 2 miles of beach, Sandals South Coast recent renovation has injected new life to the property especially when all rooms (whether a bungalow or not) are all guaranteed to be beach facing. And much like you’d expect from a Sandals property, this particular location was packed with activities including snorkelling, knee boarding, tubing, paddle boarding and more. Let’s not forget the 4 pools they had on sight.

Located seaside, there were comfortable loungers set up at night with bonfires. We loved hanging here after dinner with a coffee and treat while cozying up by the fire. Each night a great show was put on at the amphitheater including a White Night where all the guests danced the night away in all-white attire.

We had the pleasure of visiting the Red Lane Spa on our final day and oh-my-goodness was it ever a treat. We opted for the Blooming Jasmine Couple’s Massage and it was the perfect conclusion to our trip. Not only were the staff super friendly but the setting itself was so picturesque with rose petals set out throughout the room and hints of jasmine spread throughout. We finished with a bottle of champagne and a fresh fruit tray – heaven!

Food & Drinks
And last but not least, the dining! As mentioned, the entire resort is stocked with premium spirits and you’ll find this at the swim up bars, within the restaurants and at the over-water bar. This hangout spot was situated at the end of a pier overlooking the water and featured hammocks you could swing away in while sipping on a drink. Often busy during the day, it was the perfect spot for a nightcap as the pathway leading up featured oversized trees lined with twinkle lights that just made for such a romantic setting.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find Whispering Angel rose on the supplementary wine menu for a super reasonable price if you wanted something special for dinner one evening!

We enjoyed room service every morning with bottomless mimosas, fresh fruit, Canadian bacon and one heck of a cappuccino. If we were looking for another dose of caffeine, we’d make our way to Café de Paris for gourmet coffees, croissants and the best crepes out of Paris.

I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that we ate the same thing every day for lunch (because it was just that good!) from the Jerk Shack – Jamaican patties, jerk chicken, festival and Red Stripe. I HIGHLY recommend food from this spot if you visit and be sure to try both dipping sauces for the chicken.

With a limited amount of time, Fabian recommended dining at Eleanor’s and Neptunes. Eleanor’s was certainly an upscale restaurant on site featuring various steak options whereas Neptunes offered seafood fare. The property has 9 restaurants in total so a week’s stay may make it difficult getting to each one – especially if you find a favourite!

For our last night, we enjoyed a special treat- dining beach side with a candlelit dinner. Fabian worked his magic and had a table setup with 2 chairs, rose petals and champagne (he knew me all too well!!) as we watched our final sunset together.

Conclusion
This property proved that the idea of staying in a dream resort no longer requires a 15+ hour flight with multiple layovers. Sandals Resort has certainly worked hard on this specific location and others to accommodate for what the modern traveller is looking for: an unforgettable experience filled with a picturesque backdrop, modern accommodations, delightful dining options and more. I would certainly recommend looking into Sandals South Coast for your next Caribbean stay – whether it’s your first or second honeymoon!

Travel Guide: Cinque Terre

After a relaxing few days in Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, we were ready for a pit stop with a little more adventure. So we packed up our car and headed towards Cinque Terre for the next few days.
Where to Stay
I must have done hours upon hours of research on which village to stay in and how to get the car into the area. There were so many different opinions on which town was best suited to our type of vacation and pace. I should also add that even at 4 months in advance of our trip, we were finding a lot of B&B’s and hotels were fully booked up. Alas, we decided to stay in a nearby surf town, Levanto, rather than trying to find accommodation within the park.
If you are keen on staying within the park, Manuel’s Guest House came highly recommended and had views like no other. I stumbled across Villa Valentina when searching on AirBnB for accommodations in the Levanto area. The charm and proximity sold us but to say our expectations were blown away was an understatement. Run by an American ex-pat and her husband, we were welcomed with open arms (literally) and a bottle of their house-made Prosecco. Breakfast was served every morning in the courtyard with a wood-burning fireplace, blankets and food made from whatever ingredients they had in their herb garden and farm. The staff were amazing at providing insider tips and tricks to the national park, setting up dinner reservations and coordinating local activities on off-days.
We didn’t have the opportunity to take advantage of it, but they also host their own private boat tour of the villages, which provides a perspective like no other. We were a 4-minute drive (or a short bike ride) to the train station, which worked out perfectly getting in and out of the park each day.
Another unexpected bonus was getting to explore the city of Levanto. We loved walking around at night through the streets or popping into the local deli for a sandwich.
Tips and Tricks for Cinque Terre
1) If you’re super keen on seeing all 5 villages in one day, it is certainly possible but not recommended. I feel like the biggest unknown to us was how long we’d need to tackle each village and what was worth spending time in or not. Since we banked on spending 2 days in town, we stopped at all 5 villages spending about 1-2 hours in each and then decided which ones we wanted to go back and see.
2) Anticipate about a 30-minute wait at the train station to purchase your park pass prior to entry. It was also more economical to buy a 2 day pass versus the 1 day pass. This also comes in handy if you’re looking to eat in the area for dinner but don’t anticipate visiting any of the villages during the day.
3) Beach destination on the brain? Then be sure to bank on spending time in Monterosso for the day. The crystal blue waters are just like the photos and the candy-coloured umbrellas make for the perfect pics.
4) Despite visiting in low-season, the amount of tourists was still insane. Bank on waiting 2-3 minutes to snap a photo and anticipate lines most places you’ll go.
5) If you’re looking for an intense hike, be sure to check which trails are open or closed in advance as there is much construction happening in the area now and more scheduled for years to come.
The Villages
Monterosso Al Mare: Famous for the bright striped umbrellas and beach, this is definitely one of the more lively villages along the way. Whether it was people watching from a bench of wandering through town, we probably enjoyed this town the most of them all. Some of the best eats were in this area as well.
Vernazza: One of the most vibrant coloured towns, this city appears smaller than most but actually has winding back streets that must be explored. We opted out but there is a hike you can take which will lead you to sweeping views of the village and the water unlike any other.
Corniglia: Known as the quiet village, I would certainly agree with that statement. There is also an almost 400-step path that will take you to the heart of the city from the train station or you can take a shuttle bus to the spot for just under 3 Euros. We spent all of an hour in this town before deciding we had ‘seen it all’ and felt it was time to move.
Manarola: I would say this would be my second favourite spot second to Monterosso Al Mare. There was an amazing pathway that took you up to the top of the hill to give you views of the town and Corniglia like no other. There were also some cute boutiques to shop (expect to pay tourist prices though).
Riomaggiore: Last but not least, Riomaggiore is also a must do. A bit of a hike but be sure to walk all the way to the water and scale down the steps to get one insane view of the town and the boats being loaded onto shore.
Where to Eat
Nessun Dorma (Manarola): This spot can be hard to find but look for the winding staircase that overlooks the water. Anticipate a wait at this location but I swear to you – it is worth every single minute. We ordered the large charcuterie board and wine and both agree – it may have been the most scenic restaurant view we’ve probably ever seen. While it’s safe to anticipate a lineup, grab a bottle of wine or beer for the wait and soak up the views!
Torre Aurora (Monterosso Al Mare): Highly recommend a happy hour drink at this spot. The views are incredible!
Enoteca da Eliseo (Monterosso Al Mare): Another great spot for small bites and drinks while people watching.
Il Parata (Vernazza): My friend Emily recommended this spot for lunch fare and oh-my-goodness, it was worth the small trek. The seafood risotto was to-die-for!
L’Anorca della Tortuga (Monterosso): We dined here at sunset one evening and it was absolutely magical. Expect higher prices at this spot but the food was definitely worth the wait and the wine list was impressive.

Trattoria da Oscar (Monterosso): We ordered a chestnut ravioli that was life-changing at this spot. It can be a little hard to find in the winding streets. Don’t expect great service but the fare definitely makes it worthwhile!
We had booked our flight home from Milan and with 1 day left, we decided to road trip up to Lake Como since it was both on our bucket lists. I definitely suggest staying a minimum of 2 nights as 1 felt rushed and we spent most of our day on the water taxi for sightseeing. We stayed at the dreamiest property  – Villa Regina Teodolinda – only a few doors down from George Clooney.
